Where do I file retirement portfolio quarterly statements?
Unless used for taxes or investment resale purposes, the quarterly statements can be filed by month or in the green rotating section of your FreedomFiler (alternatively you can keep the most recent statement in a Remove/Replace file). Typically an annual summary is issued which can ultimately be stored in your Archive along with other year-end tax forms, providing a ten-year historical record over time. NOTE: consider saving indefinitely all forms 8606 showing any non-deductible contributions to an IRA (you may use a Permanent file "Investments Owned" to hold forms 8606). Consult your tax advisor for any special circumstances. As a general rule, retirement accounts do not require you to determine the original purchase price of investments when sold at a later time. Instead, the full amount of withdrawals you make are either taxed as income or tax-free, depending on whether you already paid taxes before making the deposits (i.e. non-deductible IRA). This makes extensive record keeping largely unnecessary except for historical purposes.
*NOTE: While FreedomFiler® provides a method of automatic purging which eliminates the need to review files, you must ultimately decide which documents are kept two years, ten years, or indefinitely. FreedomFiler® is not liable under any circumstances for claims of loss or damage arising from suggested document retention guidelines. Consult a professional advisor to determine your specific document retention needs and adapt your system accordingly.
Thank you!
